Halki Island …. so close, so far… Halki has a total number of 300 residents of which school pupils of all levels are 50. All the members of the association are in a disadvantaged area and in a social exclusion status, since the island is often excluded for reasons of geography and weather. Having only 2 or 3 times a week connection to the Capital island (Rhodes) every social and educational activity is limited.

Halki Island Halki is a small island very close to Rhodes, at the southwest of Greece. Halkis harbor is inhabited, very pleasant to the eye, beautiful and amphitheatrically built. Worth mentioning are the architecture of the houses, the medieval castle (built at 1400 a.c.), the beautiful beaches, the churches and the small alleys. Halki has 300 residents, who are mostly employed in the tourism industry, but also in fishing and farming. During the summer, many people visit the island and it is during this time, when our children have the opportunity to gather with their friends from Rhodes and Athens or even meet new friends in a dreamlike summer environment. Unfortunately, the dream lasts until September, when the locals disposition changes, as the winter months isolation approaches.

United Parents Association Nursery Primary Junior Senior High School Junior and Senior High School …Here comes the United Parents Association involvement. New teachers come, that unfortunately change every one or two years. As a result, the development of a constructive and trustful relationship between students, teachers and parents becomes very difficult. To this end our United Parents Association, which was created a year ago (and plans to continue its work in the foreseeable future) is organizing: Parents – teachers meetings aiming at getting to know each other better. In these meetings traditional food and desserts are offered. Traditional dancing courses, in which students and teachers participate as well (there are no other cultural organizations in Chalki) Cinema club which, with the teachers cooperation, shows movies regularly (there is no cinema or theater on the island)

The participation has the aim to involve the parents of our students in exchange of knowledge and practices to gain a broader view of lifelong learning. Thus the operation of the school will become more active (through the parents) and more efficient for the improvement of educational processes, to the benefit of our students. Our participation in the Learning Parents program provides a chance for us, the parents of Halki, to address the issues of Parent – Student – Teacher relationship triangle, get inspiration from our partners and improve ourselves as much as we can serving our kids best interest.
