A device that does some kind of work for you
Simple Machines A device that does some kind of work for you
2
Definitions Motion – movement as a result of some force
Force – A push or pull applied to an object Work – The application of force to cause an object to move in the direction of the force
3
Definitions continued:
Load – An external force on an object Effort – The force that you apply to the machine to move the load or overcome a resistance Potential Energy – Energy at rest. Kinetic Energy – Energy in motion.
4
Lever – parts of a lever Fulcrum – the point around which a lever turns or pivots Effort Load *There are three classes of levers
5
Class one Lever The fulcrum is between the effort and the load.
Examples See-saw Hammer’s Claw Scissors Nail Clippers Pliers Effort Load Fulcrum
6
Class Two Lever The fulcrum is at one end, and the effort is at the other. The load falls in between them. Examples: Stapler Bottle Opener Wheelbarrow Nut Cracker Effort Load Fulcrum
7
Class Three Lever The fulcrum is at one end on top the effort is next to the fulcrum and the load is on the end. Examples Fishing pole Your arm Hockey Stick Effort Load Fulcrum
8
Wheel and Axle A wheel attached to a smaller wheel or shaft to increase force or speed Example: Bicycle wheel Grindstone Steering wheel Gears
9
Inclined Plane A plane set at an angle to a horizontal surface forming a ramp. Example: Ramp A Roller coaster Stairs
10
Inclined Plane
11
Wedge Made up of two inclined planes that form a point. It is used to push an object apart. Example: Axe knife Doorstop
12
Screw Machine An inclined plane that is wrapped around a pole Example
Drill bits Bottle cap C - clamps
13
Pulley Uses grooved wheel and a rope to raise, lower, or move a load
Example Crane Flag pole Window blinds Garage door opener
