Life is Cellular
2
Discovery of the Cell The cell was first discovered in 1665 by Robert Hooke. He was viewing a piece of cork that had tiny chambers that reminded him of the “cells” at a monastery.
3
Cell Theory After the cell was discovered research that was compiled by biologists and supported the following statements: All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. New cells are produced from existing cells.
4
Organelles All cells contain small organs called organelles that help to complete the various functions that the cell requires.
5
Eukaryote Cell Structure
Plant and Animal Cells Contain a nucleus Genetic material (DNA) is separated from the rest of the cell
6
Eukaryotic Organelles
Nucleus Ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Apparatus Lysosomes Vacuoles Mitochondria Chloroplasts Cytoskeleton Cell Membrane Cell Wall Cytoplasm Cells Splitting (Cytokinesis)
7
