1 Understanding Heat Transfer: Conduction, Convection and Radiation
Physical Science Ms. Mandel

2 D2 Explain how energy is transferred by conduction, convection and radiation.

3 Learning Targets I can differentiate between conduction, convection and radiation. I can provide examples of thermal energy transfer.

4 Does heat move from cool areas to warm areas OR warm areas to cool areas?
Heat always moves from a warmer area to a cooler area. Hot objects in a cool room will cool to room temperature. Cold objects in a warmer room will heat up to room temperature.

5 Question In terms of thermal energy, what would happen if a cup of coffee and a popsicle were left on the table in this room? Why? The cup of coffee will cool until it reaches room temperature. The popsicle will melt and then the liquid will warm to room temperature.

6 Thermal Energy Transfer
How is thermal energy transferred? Conduction Convection Radiation

7 What is happening in the animation below?
What method of heat transfer is this depicting? Conduction

8 What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
A material that heat can flow through easily Insulator A material that does not easily allow heat energy to pass through it

9 Why are metals good conductors?
When the metal is heated, this “sea of electrons” gain kinetic energy and transfer it throughout the metal. The valence electrons of metal atoms are free to move from atom to atom.

10 Question Why is it a good idea to use a hot mitt when taking a hot pan off of the stove?

11 What is happening in the image below?
What method of heat transfer is this depicting? Convection

12 Water movement Cools at the surface Convection current Hot water rises
Cooler water sinks

13 Question Why is it windy at the beach?

14

15 What do all of these items have in common?
What method of heat transfer are these depicting? Radiation

16 Question Why is it difficult to walk on pavement with bare feet in the summer?

17 Learning Target Checkpoint
What is conduction? Name an example of conduction. What is convection? Name an example of convection? What is radiation? Name an example of radiation.

18 Thermal Energy Transfer Song
