Carbon dioxide enters leaf Chlorophyll pigment in leaf captures energy from the sun. Photosynthesis needs: Sunlight energy, Water from the roots, Carbon dioxide from air Photosynthesis makes: Glucose (food for the plant), Oxygen that is released into the air People and other animals breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Water is absorbed by tree roots and transported to leaves. Cells of a leaf contain chloroplast as shown above. Chlorophyll is located inside chloroplast.

Photosynthesis Helps US!
Oxygen made during photosynthesis is what you breathe! You are a consumer! Air you breathe out is called carbon dioxide. Producers use carbon dioxide to make their food! This is what maintains Earth’s natural balance of carbon dioxide. Consumers take in food and oxygen from producers. Consumers release carbon dioxide and water to producers.

In science class, the students were discussing how plants feed themselves.
Marc said: “I think plants get food by using their roots to soak up energy from the dirt.” Stefanie said: “I heard that plants turn sunlight into sugar for energy.” Miles said: “Plants get energy from soaking up water through their leaves.” Who is correct? Explain your answer in your science notebook.

Group Discussion Question:
If plants need the Sun’s heat and light energy to produce food, where would you predict algae growth would be greatest in a pond?
