2. James Made Delicious cakes last Christmas!
James – 1607: Jamestown – 1st permanent English settlement in North America (Virginia)
Made – 1620: Mayflower Compact – Civil Body Politic – representative or self-government in the new colony. Pilgrims on the Mayflower signed the document.
Delicious – 1776: Declaration of Independence – Americans declare their independence from England. The Intolerable Acts were the tipping point.
Cakes – 1787: The U.S. Constitution – new plan for government. Three branches and new processes for how government should function
Last – 1803: Louisiana Purchase – land acquired from France
Christmas – : The Civil War – North (Union) v. South (Confederacy)

Poor – Popular Sovereignty: Power comes from the people “Consent of the Governed”
Ruth – Republicanism: people exercise their rights by voting for political representatives
Feels – Federalism: power is shared between the states and national government
She - Separation of Powers: division of basic government roles into three branches
(judicial, legislative, and executive)
Can’t – Checks and Balances: each branch can exercise checks over other branches
Like – Limited Government: Everyone, citizens and leaders, must obey the laws
Insects – Individual Rights: The Bill of rights guarantees certain individual rights, or personal liberties
