James – 1607: Jamestown – 1st permanent English settlement in North America (Virginia) Made – 1620: Mayflower Compact – Civil Body Politic – representative or self-government in the new colony. Pilgrims on the Mayflower signed the document. Delicious – 1776: Declaration of Independence – Americans declare their independence from England. The Intolerable Acts were the tipping point. Cakes – 1787: The U.S. Constitution – new plan for government. Three branches and new processes for how government should function Last – 1803: Louisiana Purchase – land acquired from France Christmas – : The Civil War – North (Union) v. South (Confederacy)
