1 Do Now: Sentence Combining
Change each set of sentences into one sentence each: Sophomores take English. They study world cultures. The study of grammar remains a critical skill. It is a lost art.

3 Prepositional Phrases
Prepositional phrases act as adjectives and adverbs, and tell you How: Fred is sore from his long football practice. When: I will see Tim on Wednesday. Where: The book is on the counter. Which one: The wall with puzzle pieces is cool.

4 Find the Phrase: “I've had tendonitis since college.” - Michael Jordan
“Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.” - Mark Twain  “I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn't show.” - Andrew Wyeth 

5 Find the Phrase “Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.” - Albert Einstein  “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” - Walt Disney  “There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.” - Buddha 

6 Appositives: rename or describe a noun
Usually in commas before or after a noun: The novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, was summer reading. The fat cat, Tito, was licking its lips.

7 Appositive Phrases: longer appositives
A state known for its cold climate, Alaska is closer to the North Pole than Texas. Martin Luther King, Jr., a famous civil rights leader, is often quoted.

8 Find the Phrase "The hangman, a grey-haired convict in the white uniform of the prison, was waiting beside his machine." ("A Hanging," George Orwell, 1931) "The sky was sunless and grey, there was snow in the air, buoyant motes, play things that seethed and floated like the toy flakes inside a crystal." ("The Muses Are Heard", Truman Capote)

9 Find the Phrase "Though her cheeks were high-colored and her teeth strong and yellow, she looked like a mechanical woman, a machine with flashing, glassy circles for eyes." (Kate Simon, 'Bronx Primitive', 1982) The most untidy area of the house, Benny's study room is packed full of books.

10 Do Now: Meet in your study Groups, and share your drafts of the Causal Analysis. Add an appositive and find some prepositional phrases.
