Facts about beethoven Beethoven loved cooking, so much so that he named one of his pieces "Christ! On the Mount of Olives" He was jealous that Rimsky-Korsakov wrote an opera called "Mozart and Salieri" instead of "Mozart and Beethoven" He designed one of his piano sonatas to be played with building implements and called it the "Hammer-Klavier Sonata" He wrote another of his sonatas entirely at night and so called it the "Moonlight Sonata" Beethoven's father was an alcoholic and emotionally abusive to Beethoven when Beethoven was growing up; Beethoven's height was 5' 3" Beethoven had unusually bad skin Beethoven was very temperamental and would end performances if he became aware of anyone in the audience talking; When Beethoven's brother died, Beethoven bribed officials to obtain custody of his brother's son, thus taking his nephew away from his brother's wife. Beethoven's deafness was the result of lead poisoning, and lead poisoning was also the cause of Beethoven's death.

Some instruments of this time
In the early 1800's there were many instruments that are still common today such as the violin, viola, guitars and banjos. However, there are also many instruments that we do not commonly see today such as the mandolin and concertina. This period has a lot of interesting instruments such as spinets, jaw harps, fifes and bugles.
7
The jaw harp (jew harp) This little lyre shaped instrument carries many names and is known in countries mostly in Europe and Asia. It is held in the mouth in between the teeth and plucked with a singular finger. This instrument can only play one note but the player can play harmonics by changing the shape of the mouth.

Moonlight Sonata Piano Sonata No. 14 is popularly known as Moonlight Sonata. Moonlight Sonata is played in C-Sharp Major. The first edition of the score is headed Sonata quasi una fantasia, a title this work shares with its companion piece, Op. 27, No. 1. Grove Music Online translates the Italian title as "sonata in the manner of a fantasy".Translated more literally, this is "sonata almost a fantasy". The name "Moonlight Sonata" comes from remarks made by the German music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab. In 1832, five years after Beethoven's death, Rellstab likened the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne.\ Within ten years, the name "Moonlight Sonata" ("Mondscheinsonate" in German) was being used in German\ and English\ publications. Later in the nineteenth century, the sonata was universally known by that name.\

THe fife The fife is a high pitched flute like instrument played in the military. It is louder and shriller than a piccolo because of its small narrow build. FUN FACT: The person who plays the fife is called a fifer.

The spinet The spinet is a smaller type of harpsicord or other keyboard instrument, such as a piano or organ. FUN FACT: the spinet was later developed into an spinettone.
