Understand the types of running mould positive and negative
3
Construction of running moulds
Aims: To understand the parts of a running mould Objectives: To know the difference between a negative mould and a positive mould
4
Construction of running moulds
Introduction What do you know? What is a horse / slipper? What is a template / profile? What is the stock? What does the brace do? What is a gig stick used for?
5
Construction of running moulds
Positive running mould A positive mould runs a section of moulding on the bench that can be lifted and cut to size then bedded in place, or run in-situ that means run on the wall or ceiling

Construction of running moulds
Negative running mould (This is also known as a reverse mould) With this mould run down a mould which is fixed to a bench it is then prepared and a positive plaster cast taken from it

Construction of running moulds
Parts of a running mould Horse / slipper This part of the running mould supports the stock and runs against the running rule. This is 1.5 times the length of the stock. Stock This part of the running mould attached to the centre of the horse / slipper at right angles is best done by housing in, but can be butted with extra supports on either side. Template Usually made from soft zinc and the profile cut using snips and filing to match an original drawing. .

Parts of a running mould Brace Fixes from the end of the horse / slipper to the end of the stock (known as the nib) to stop any movement which would cause chattering. Gig stick Fixed to the running mould to run circular or an arc moulding work. To make it accurate the pivot point is in line with the metal profile. Small radius – it may be easier to construct the running mould with a longer stock.
