The First President: George Washington Seen as honest, hero of Revolution. 1st presidential election held in 1789. Electoral college unanimously chose Washington. John Adams served as vice-president.

Organizing the Government: Precedent; An action or decision that later serves as example. Departments; State- works with other countries. Chose Thomas Jefferson. War- nation’s defense. Henry Knox Treasury- nation’s economy or financial security. Alexander Hamilton Postmaster General- setting up post office. Samuel Osgood These departments and heads make up the presidents cabinet (advisors).

Americans’ Expectations for the Nation: Americans wanted improved trade and freedom from too many restrictions. From gov’t- protection, stable economy Population of U.S. (1790) 4 million Most farmers Fair taxes, not much interference Merchants, businessmen Wanted help from gov’t from foreign competition

Americans’ Expectations for the Nation: New York City was nations first capital. Bustling economy New York Stock Exchange founded in 1792. By 1790, population was 33,000.
