Power to create laws and declare war With a new government officially created(limited monarchy), old problems remained such as food shortages and debt There were THREE groups of people in this Assembly

Three Groups RADICALS: Opposed Monarchy and wanted change
MODERATES: Wanted change, but not as much as radicals CONSERVATIVES: Wanted a limited Monarchy with few changes ***Think about today’s political system…***

France at war Monarchs in other European nations began to worry that similar revolts would happen in their countries As a result, Prussia and Austria urged France to put King Louis back as the Absolute Monarch Legislative assembly voted to go to war instead in 1792

The King is held captive
Threatened by the Prussian commander to not harm the royal family, 20,000 men and women invaded the palace that held the King, Marie Antoinette, and their children From a rumor that prisoners in Paris would escape and take control of the city, citizens took matter in their own hands- killing more than 1,000 inmates

The Jacobins Most of the people involved in the government changes were members of a radical political organization known as the Jacobin Club Jean-Paul Marat called for the death of all those who continued to support the king- he was later murdered
