The Guru Granth Sahib Lesson objectives:
To know that the Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of the writings of the ten gurus To understand the significance of the Guru Granth Sahib for Sikhs and how this is shown in their treatment of the Guru Granth Sahib in the Gurdwara. To consider the advantages and disadvantages of having scriptures over a living guru for guidance in life.

What is the Guru Granth Sahib?
The Guru Granth Sahib contains the holy writings of Sikhism, but it is seen as far more than a book! Guru Gobind Singh decided that rather than appoint a human successor, he write down the teachings of all the Gurus in written form. It is seen as containing the living word of God. The book is now treated in exactly the same way as a human leader would be.

About the Guru Granth Sahib
Every copy of the book has exactly the same number of pages, 1430 in total. Every page of the book is the same in every copy. The original copy of the book still exists and it from this that every copy is taken. The book is written in a special language called gurmukhi (which was invented by the second guru).

About the Guru Granth Sahib
Most of the content are hymns written by the 10 gurus. Each section starts with the ‘Mool Mantar’ which sums up the central beliefs of Sikhs. The book also contains some writings by Hindu and Muslim leaders.

Is it better to have a holy book then a living teacher?
1) With the person next to you, make a spider diagram of the advantages and disadvantages (use different colours) 2) Pair up with another pair and compare answers. Write down the other ideas and decide which two arguments are the best 3) Write an extended answer to the question, making sure you look at both sides of the argument.
