Powers of the monarch and role of the common people made laws, conducted religious ceremonies, led armies during the war, used armed soldiers to punish people who did not pay their taxes

King had council to advise them known as aristocrats Aristocrats were usually wealthy men who owned a lot of land. Aristocrats soon realized that since they advised the king, they had the real power and took over

Some cities had the aristocrats saying the king should only rule for a certain number of years. Monarchies were basically gone by 800 BCE
