Comparison Shopping The largest packages aren’t always the least
expensive per unit. A larger package may not always be the best buy even if it is cheaper per unit if the product isn’t going to be used before the expiration date or spoilage. What are some characteristics you look at when comparing two or more products?

Unit Pricing Price per Unit
Unit can be an ounce, a quart, a pound, or other unit to show the best value. Unit Pricing = total price divided by the number of units Unit pricing is often figured and listed on the store shelf. Unit pricing is a way to compare brands and also different size packages/containers of the same brand. .69 / 3 oz. = .23 per oz. Product Name Unit $ per unit

Cost per serving Cost per serving = total price divided by the number of servings Cost per serving is often used to compare two different types of foods. Example: Chicken breast with bone and skin vs. boneless skinless chicken breast. $4.00 / 10 servings = $ .40 per serving

Circle the Least Expensive Write down the savings Example: Frigo String Cheese 4 oz. $1.19 = $ .30 1 oz $ .39 = $ .39 Saving: $ .09 per ounce

Example 2 Ground Beef 1.6 lbs $1.49 lb = $ 1.49 per lb.
Savings: $.22 per lb.

Ounces in a Gallon 1 gallon = 4 quarts 4quarts = 16 cups
1 cup = 8 ounces 16 cups x 8oz = 128 ounces
