An acid has a pH less than 7. What is acid precipitation? Precipitation that falls from the sky with a pH less than 7. What chemicals cause acid precipitation? Sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, nitrogen oxides, PANs and other oxides typically cause acid precipitation. How does smog production relate to acid precipitation? When the chemicals that cause smog react with the water/water vapor in the atmosphere, acid precipitation forms. What effect does acid rain have on lakes? Acid rain causes fish kills and other aquatic wildlife to die. What effect does acid rain have on trees? Acid rain causes trees to lose their leaves and have stunted growth.
