The Catcher in the Rye By Alex, Brett, Austin, and Michael

2 Summary Holden Caulfield (protagonist) gets expelled from Pencey Prep after flunking four of his classes. He leaves the school four days before he is expected to be home to wander the streets of New York City.

3 Theme: Loss of innocence
These: Through the use of plot events and Holden’s point of view, we see that true loss of innocence comes with the realization that nothing ever stays the same.

4 Quote 1: Snowball “I went over to my window and opened it and packed a snowball” … “Finally I didn’t throw it at anything” … “I told him I wasn’t going to chuck it at anybody, but he wouldn’t believe me. People never believe you.” page 48.

5 Quote 2: Allie “My hand still hurts me once in a while when it rains and all, and I can’t make a real fist anymore” page 50.

6 Quote 3: Museum “When I got to the museum, all of a sudden I wouldn’t have gone inside for a million bucks. It just didn’t appeal to me”. page 159

7 Quote 4: Teacher “But what did worry me was the part about how I’d woke up and found him patting me on the head and all.”… “maybe I was wrong about thinking he was making a flitty pass at me.” page 253

8 Quote 5: F* You “You can’t ever find a place that’s nice and peaceful, because there isn’t any.” … “somebody’ll sneak up and write fuck you” page 264

9 Crafts of Writing: Symbolism
Holden buys a record titled “Little Shirley Beans” for his kid sister Phoebe. It is a record made for children, but he likes the sound of it because it is “Dixieland and whorehouse.” On his way back home after his drunken night out, he shatters the record on the street, symbolically letting go of his own innocence.

10 Crafts of Writing: Foreshadowing
On his way out of Pencey Prep, Holden trips on the stairs and nearly breaks his neck. This is foreshadowing his trip to New York and how he hopes it will be a suicide trip.

11 Crafts of Writing: Metaphor
In a museum Holden fantasizes about the world being in a glass case keeping the world the same. As he leaves the museum he realizes that nothing can ever stay the same and that he must move on from his fantasy.

12 Crafts of Writing: Flashback
The whole book is a series of flashbacks centered on his adventures in New York, all detailing his life story and the events that brought on his loss of innocence
