1 LICENSING,CERTIFICATION AND APPRENTICESHIP
Element 5

2 PUPROSE To inform service TSM’s of the importance of credentialing programs and how they can be a valuable aid when job searching.

3 CREDENTIALING Federal, state or local law may require specific credentials to legally perform so jobs. Employers may choose to hire only employees who have credentials, or to pay those employees more. Credentials may improve an employee’s prospects for promotion. Credentialed Service members demonstrate to prospective civilian employers that their skills are on par with there civilian peers. Civilian credentialing can contribute to military career development, and may be accepted for self-development requirements and in performance evaluations.

4 TWO PRIMARY TYPES OF CREDENTIALING
LICENSURE-Governmental agencies-federal, state, or local- grant licenses to individuals to practice a specific occupation, such as a medical license for doctors. Licenses are typically mandatory.

5 TWO PRIMARY TYPES OF CREDENTIALING
Certification- Non-governmental agencies, associations, and even private sector companies may grant certificates to individuals who meet predetermined qualifications generally set by professional associations. Certification is typically an optional credential, although some state licensure boards and employers may require it.

6 APPRENTICESHIPS The term “apprenticeship” means an arrangement that includes a paid-work component and an educational or instructional component, wherein an individual obtains workplace-relevant knowledge and skills. Apprenticeships provide paid, relevant workplace experiences and opportunities to develop skills that employer’s value. They can even lead to good jobs, and ultimately, careers.

7 APPRENTICESHIPS GI BILL UTILIZATION:
The VA’s website includes information on eligibility for these benefit programs. One use for this benefit is for certificate programs and licensing and certification tests which must be approved for the GI Bill. VA CAN ONLY PAY FOR THE COSTOF THE TESTS. No additional fees connected with obtaining the license or certification will be covered.
