DO NOW!! We are going to be learning about oceanography AND marine biology in here Write down what you think the difference is between the 2 If you don’t know, just write down an inference (an educated guess) I will be collecting this in a few minutes, so get going!
2
Now let’s find out what the heck it is you’ve decided to learn by taking this class!
3
What is Marine Science? Marine Science is a field of knowledge dealing with the ocean, composed of 2 main disciplines: Oceanography Marine Biology
4
Marine Biology What is Biology? Biology is the study of life
Marine? What does that mean? Marine-of or pertaining to the oceans So, Marine Biology must be the study of life in the oceans!
5
Oceanography Oceanography is the study of the physical characteristics of the oceans, including Temperature Pressure Density Salinity Light Sound Movement of ocean water
6
Movement of Ocean Water
What are some ways that ocean water moves? Waves Currents Tides
7
Many different scientific disciplines tie into Marine Science!
Physics – the study of forces and energy Biology – the study of life Chemistry – the study of matter in its molecular form Geology – the study of the structure of Earth Meteorology – the study of weather and climate Astronomy – the study of objects and matter in outer space
8
The Earth is called “The Water Planet”
Make an estimate! Guess how much of Earth’s surface is made up of water. The truth is, water makes up about 70 percent of Earth’s surface! Let’s see if we can prove it!! (Globe Activity)
9
In Summary then…. Marine science is the study of the oceans, including it’s physical characteristics (oceanography) and all of the life found in it (marine biology) Marine science encompasses many different scientific fields, such as physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology, biology, and astronomy Oceans have a tremendous impact on life – not only in the water but on land too! Earth’s surface is approx. 70% water!
