Compressor Safety Practices
2
Observe All Hazard and Warning Labels
3
Always Wear the Appropriate Safety Gear
Steel toe shoes Safety glasses or goggles Gloves Hard hat Ear protection Nomex™ coveralls
4
These Are Unsafe Tool Uses!
5
Torquing Safety Points
Never torque any fasteners or flanges on a unit that is running or pressurized Use correct torquing procedures Use correct size / range torque wrench Do not use cheater bars or pipes on wrenches Use thick wall sockets, no chrome sockets INSTRUCTOR: NOW IS THE TIME TO ADMINISTER THE WORKSHEET AND HAVE THE STUDENTS INDIVIDUALLY WORK OUT THE ANSWER. THE CORRECT ANSWER FOR THE WORK SHEET PROBLEM IS FT-LBS AFTER REVIEWING THE WORKSHEET, ADMINISTER THE POST TEST.
6
Lifting Safety: Use Your Legs, Spare Your Back
Know the weight of the item you are lifting Bend at the knees (not your waist) and lift using your legs Ask a co-worker to help with the load Use a crane, hoist, fork truck etc. if in doubt
7
Lifting Safely: Proper Crane and Sling Use
Inspect all lifting straps and chains for cuts or other damage before using Verify lifting capacity of cranes or chain falls Check lifting eye bolts for bent or damaged thread section
8
Lifting Safety: Use Proper Swivel Eye Bolts
9
Before Performing any Work on The Unit Read the OEM Manual
10
Before performing any work, ensure that the electric power has been turned off and locked out at the breaker panel to prevent accidental energizing.
11
Warning: When the unit is operational there are lethal voltages in the motor control panel and the temperature and drain monitors! During normal maintenance or when the unit is shutdown, before opening these panels, ensure that the breaker panel has been turned off and locked out to prevent accidental electrical shock.
12
Warning: Contact with hot discharge piping may cause burns
Warning: Contact with hot discharge piping may cause burns. The second stage discharge temperature should not exceed 320 deg. F if the unit is operating correctly.
13
2nd discharge pipe Very Hot: Guarding recommended Rear and top of cylinder: Discharge temperatures present Very Hot: Warning: Contact with hot discharge piping may cause burns. The second stage discharge temperature should not exceed 320 deg. F if the unit is operating correctly. 1st discharge pipe Very Hot: Guarding recommended
14
Always Depressurize and Vent the Unit Before Working On It!
Make sure that all pressure relief valves are properly set and in good working order.
15
Warning: High discharge pressures may cause injury if work is attempted before the unit is properly depressurized and vented. The second stage discharge pressure should not exceed 110 psig if the unit is operating correctly. Ensure that all pressure gauges are properly calibrated and in good working order.
16
Keep Hands Away From Belts and Guards!
Do Not operate without the guards in place!
17
Keep Hands Away From All Reciprocating Parts!
The Crossheads Reciprocate
18
Numerous Pinch Points!
19
NL Piston Rod Warning: Do not, under any circumstances, apply any oil or other petroleum based lubricants to a part in contact with the air stream! These are Non-Lube (NL) units. This warning applies to the piston, piston rings, and rod components. An explosion or fire could occur.
20
Warning: Compressor valves are basically one-way check valves
Warning: Compressor valves are basically one-way check valves. If they are installed incorrectly damage to the unit and/or personal injury may occur! Always double check to make sure they are correctly oriented before installing them.
21
Gas Flow In gas damping (usually applied to channel and concentric ring valves), gas is trapped behind the moving element and forced out through a narrow gap as the moving element nears full lift, thus providing a "cushioning" or damping effect.
22
Warning: Be Aware: The compressor will automatically drain condensate and high pressure air from the moisture separators on a timed basis and on every shutdown. Drain connection piped away from machine
