Regions An area of the earth’s surface defined by a set of characteristics or a single characteristic. A region has boundaries that separate it from surrounding regions

Homogeneous Regions (means the same)
Characteristics within this region type are similar; and different from those regions surrounding it. There are 2 types Physical Human

Physical Regions Micro Regions (small) include Niagara Escarpment, Saskatchewan Badlands Macro – Sahara Desert, Western Cordillera, Amazon Rainforest

Human Regions Micro – Chinatown, Preston Heights, Deer Ridge, Native Reservation Macro – Religion Regions (Islam, Christianity), Language Regions (French, Spanish, English

Functional Regions These are human regions only Created with a purpose
They have a central point or focus Well defined boundaries Example: time zones, provinces, countries,

Political Regions Micro – townships, city of Cambridge, Region of Waterloo Macro – Provinces (Ontario) Countries (Canada), Western Europe, Alliances (NATO) Time Zones

Economic Regions Micro: Pizza Pizza – 40 min (drive time + to keep hot) PHS – area drawn around school within Waterloo Region. Concerned with school population, buses and routes and distance from school Macro – NAFTA, EUROPEAN Union

Cultural Regions Micro – Area served by a church pastor, library
