St George is Patron Saint of many countries e.g. Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Istanbul, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia…. including being Patron Saint of England. St George is also the Patron Saint of Scouting among other things….. St George is likely to have become England’s Patron Saint after his popularity during the time of the Crusades as George represented the ideal of Christian Chivalry. We know very little about St George… he probably lived in the 4th Century and suffered martyrdom near Lydda (in Palestine) before the time of the Emperor Constantine. It is possible that he was a soldier. St George was a popular saint by the 6th Century and many legends survive in Greek, Latin, Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, Ethiopian and Turkish. The dragon story first appears in stories around the time of the twelfth century.
