2. Gather The Lord be with you And also with you
St George is Patron Saint of many countries e.g. Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Istanbul, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia…. including being Patron Saint of England.
St George is also the Patron Saint of Scouting among other things…..
St George is likely to have become England’s Patron Saint after his popularity during the time of the Crusades as George represented the ideal of Christian Chivalry.
We know very little about St George… he probably lived in the 4th Century and suffered martyrdom near Lydda (in Palestine) before the time of the Emperor Constantine. It is possible that he was a soldier. St George was a popular saint by the 6th Century and many legends survive in Greek, Latin, Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, Ethiopian and Turkish. The dragon story first appears in stories around the time of the twelfth century.

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, who fought back with his angels; but the dragon was defeated, and he and his angels were not allowed to stay in heaven any longer. The huge dragon was thrown out - that ancient serpent, named the Devil, or Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was thrown down to earth, and all his angels with him.
