What was reborn? Greek and Roman art and ideas were rediscovered, studied, and used by people of the Renaissance. A revival of classical culture, artistic creativity and learning Classical Culture = Culture of Greece and Rome

6 The Renaissance The Middle Ages brought war and the plague to Europe
Millions of people were killed because of this Those that survived wanted to celebrate human life They began to question institutions that were unable to prevent war and death This included government and the church

7 The Renaissance brought many changes to Europe:
Middle Ages Renaissance People moved from the countryside to towns. was a more worldly age art focused on nature and humans Learning focused on Greek and Roman classics People lived in the country side Life was dominated by religious beliefs and fears of eternal punishment. church dominated art learning focused on religion and the relationship between man and God

8 Italy- The Birthplace The Renaissance began in Italy about 1300AD, nearly 200 years before the rest of Europe. then spread northward to Netherlands, Germany, France and England

9 WHY DID IT START IN ITALY???
Italy had: Urban centers like Venice, Genoa, and Florence People exchange ideas in cities Rest of Europe is still rural Merchants (business people) who were the wealthiest and most powerful class in each city-state. Earned money from industries like banking Used money to support and encourage the arts!

10 PATRONS = Individuals, families, or organizations that financially support the Arts. For Example: De Medici Family Roman Catholic Church Wealthy individuals Because they pay, they have control over what is created!

12 The Old, Middle Ages Way People proved their devotion to God by:
Dark Ages: Thought to be “dark” & “ignorant” times People proved their devotion to God by: living very poorly wearing rough clothing eating simple, plain foods Uneducated people used vernacular = local language Church architecture = main focus none given to everyday architecture. ie homes, stores, town halls. Few advances in science Greek and Roman texts were only studied to make them agree with Church teaching

Humanists: Renaissance scholars who studied the Classics = Greek & Roman texts Studied Greek values Continued the traditions of ancient Greece & Rome in painting, sculpture, and architecture Focus on human potential Be devoted to God & enjoy life
