7 Design Principles Rules for Smooth and Effective Design
Follow the KISS concept! Make navigation easy Less clicks = more success Instead of “Go to… and then click on… and then select” hyperlink with descriptive text directly to the resource. Keep in mind those with disabilities at all times Follow Universal Design for Learning principles

8 Example- The Good

9 Example- The Bad

10 Example- The Ugly

11 UDL Universal Design for Learning
Principle I: Provide Multiple Means of Representation (the “what” of learning) Principle II: Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression (the “how” of learning) Principle III: Provide Multiple Means of Engagement (the “why” of learning) About UDL- The Three Principles of UDL

12 Poll Visit this link (or scan the QR code below) to enter our poll:

13 Authentic Assessment What is it?
Provides a way to measure student knowledge and skill that is similar to what they would do in the work world Mueller, J. (2016). What is Authentic Assessment? Retrieved from: Typically requires more thought Requires originality It is not multiple choice tests and quizzes

15 Authentic Assessment How do I do it? Take a course objective
Think about how students can show or demonstrate it Think about the perfect example of it Break it down into parts or criteria Think about the not so great example of it Make a rubric and use those two points as the low and high end of the criteria

16 Other Tips- Multimedia
Lights, camera, ACTION! Brings the personal feel back into the online classroom Use Screencast-o-matic, Google Hangouts for office hours or meetings, webcam recordings, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, Kaltura CaptureSpace Closed Captioning! Adds experts, engaging videos, and something more appealing Use YouTube videos to show your concepts, especially if abstract What does a star look like when it goes supernova? Search for it on YouTube Integrate graphics as appropriate Be sure to have text backups for those with visual impairments

17 Other Tips- Multimedia

18 Other Tips- Gamify! People enjoy games, why?
Psychologically proven to promote engagement Game mechanics are designed to entice and hook their audience Uses the same old course content, but adds a twist Add a leaderboard, badges/achievements, hidden objects, a story! Use the preexisting content and put it into a real world perspective Scenario: You are an HR representative. You just covered Title IX with your employees. Manny sends an inappropriate text to Priscilla. What do you do?

19 Other Tips- Gamify!

20 Other Tips- Add Real World News
Make learning practical! Link to current events Embed RSS feeds or other news widgets Have students share their experience Design a discussion to revolve entirely around something happening in their lives that relates to the content Can be a 5 minute discussion at the beginning of class or an entire discussion board

21 Other Tips- Add Real World News
