The quiescent center (QC) defines the stem cell niche, surrounded by the columella stem cells (CSC), lateral root cap/epidermal stem cell (LRC/ESC), the ground tissue stem cell (GTSC) and the vascular stem cells (VSC). These give rise to the columella (Col), lateral root cap (LRC), epidermis (E), cortex (Cor), endodermis (En) and vascular cells of the stele (St), respectively. In one half of the root, the expression domain of SCHIZORIZA is highlighted in red and its sphere of influence is indicated in stripes.
