6. Rhetorical Analysis Introduction
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a novel by the famed humorist writer of the 1800s, Mark Twain, is about a young runaway boy. This coming of age story serves as Twain’s commentary to a post Civil War public about society’s hypocrisy and constraints. In the narrative, the main character, Huck, tries to fit into society’s expectations but finds that his own experiences and beliefs about the world make that difficult. When he encounters a run-away slave, he learned that perhaps society was not meant for him. Twain’s use of humor, allusions to Shakespeare, and the voice of a child highlights the central issue of the text: the hypocrisy of civilization.
