1 ELA Week of 1/8/18 Mrs. Weaver

2 happy new year & welcome back!
File your papers in your folder. Tests and quizzes go under test/quiz folder. Essays go under writing folder. In one folder, write a reflection for quarter 2: What did you do well on? Why? What will you improve on? How? When you are done, file your folder in your folder found in the black bin. No more than 3 people at a time. Read a book when you are finished or if you are waiting to file.

Discuss with a partner how you can evaluate or judge writing. How do you know if the writing is well written? How do you know if it is credible (reliable)? How do you know if the writing is weak?

On topic, strong introduction/conclusion, clear thesis. Evidence Multiple sources, supports topic, reliable sources, cited properly. Conventions Minimal errors, no run on sentences, complete sentences.

7 YOUR TURN! Think about something you are an expert on and could explain to others how to evaluate or judge specific criteria on the topic. For example: Art Music Video games Photography Dance (ballet, tap, etc.) Restaurants

11 PLAN YOUR ESSAY You will create a 5 paragraph essay writing to explain how to evaluate the criteria of ________ (insert your topic). You must have 3 different sets of criteria (qualities) to judge your topic. Create a chicken foot with your thesis and 3 body paragraphs. Write your introduction when finished. Remember to include a hook, background information, and write your thesis. Place the papers in your blue folder or take home if you need help finding your sources. You must have this in class tomorrow!!! Read a book when finished.

At just 2 cents an acre, that was a bargain! Alaska is rich in forests wildlife and minerals such as gold. The king salmon is the state fish, and it's state gem is jade Dog mushing, once a mane form of transportation in Alaska, is its official sport.

14 Find your sources – You must use kidtopia.info for your search!
You will have 30 minutes to find 3 sources and 4-6 pieces of evidence for your essay. If you are not sure if it is an appropriate site, raise your hand. You will write down the evidence on the paper you used for your planning. Remember to look for evidence to support the criteria you chose to write about for each body paragraph. You should aim for 2 pieces of evidence for each criteria/paragraph. Remember you are looking fore evidence to inform someone how to judge/evaluate your topic!

15 Write your essay Proof read your work then read a book when done.
Write to explain how to judge the criteria of ____________________ (insert your topic). Remember to include: -An introduction with a hook, background information, thesis (from chicken foot) -3 body paragraphs (one for each criteria) with evidence to support each criteria Remember you are writing to explain how someone would judge/evaluate your topic! -Conclusion -Transitions -Proper punctuation and spelling Proof read your work then read a book when done.

Paul revere was born on January He grew up to become a silversmith, but he were best known for his famous ride. On April 18, 1775, Paul Revere is sent to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British were coming He stop at every house to warn they. Two other men, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott, also rode hoarses, but Paul Revere became famous. All 3 men were arrested by the British but Hancock and Adams were safe.

That poem braught fame to it's author, but it did not bring riches. Did you now that Poe was payed just $15 for his masterpiece! Each year in Baltimore, Maryland, a mysterious visitor leaves roses at Poes' grave on the eve of his Birthday.

33 Comprehension test Open book and notes. You may not use the book or notes for the vocabulary questions. Your written response must restate the question, state the answer, and support the answer using 2 details from the text. See below for how I will grade it. Restating the question – 1 pt. Answer – 1 pt. 2 Details from the text– 2 pts. Conventions (spelling, punctuation, & capitals) – 1 pt. When finished: Finish your essay and turn in with your planning page, rubric, and sources page. Read a book if all of the above is done.

34 Autobiography Directions: You will write an autobiography about your life. Decide what important events you will write about. You must have the following: Introduction 3 Body Paragraphs to represent 3 specific events/times in your life. For example: Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School or Elementary school years, Family trip in 2012, Baby brother being born in 2015 You must write about them in chronological order. Conclusion Remember to use the proper pronouns in your writing. Remember to use specific events, statements, and feelings in your writing

35 Comprehension test Open book and notes. You may not use the book or notes for the vocabulary questions. Your written response must restate the question, state the answer, and support the answer using 2 details from the text. See below for how I will grade it. Restating the question – 1 pt. Answer – 1 pt. 2 Details from the text– 2 pts. Conventions (spelling, punctuation, & capitals) – 1 pt. When finished: Finish your autobiography and turn in with your name. Read a book if all of the above is done.
