Changing Momentum Operation Torch – Dwight D Eisenhower defeats German troops in North Africa. Battle of Stalingrad – Only 90,000 of 330,000 Germans survived the winter before surrender – 1 million Soviet deaths. Clip Italy is invaded, Mussolini is found in disguises, killed & hung in Milan.

D-Day Invasion – June 3 million troops landed in Normandy France. Germans were dug in = huge losses, but Allies held the beaches. Eventually fought through German lines. Aug. 25 – Germany surrendered Paris & France was liberated. Soon followed by Belgium & Luxembourg

Battle of the Bulge & Surrender
Hitler ordered a counter attack in Norther France. – Dec Desperate for a last win. German tanks pushed through American lines (causing a bulge)… Allies recovered and pushed Germans back. No reinforcements = retreat and loss Hitler, surrounded, killed himself- Germany surrendered May 7, 1945 V-E Day – Victory in Europe

The Pacific Japan lost most of its navy to the U.S., but kamikaze pilots still a problem. U.S. began taking Japanese islands Took major islands all around Japan, but the nation would not surrender. President Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb. Aug. 6, 1945 – Hiroshima – 70,000-80,000 deaths Aug. 9, 1945 – Nagasaki – 70,000 deaths. September 2, 1945 – Japan Surrendered.
