1 Carbon: The Building Block of Organic Compounds
11/14/2018 2

2 Organic compounds – compounds that make up all living things.

3 Organic compounds always have carbon plus a few other elements like hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, phosphorus, or sulfur. CHONPS

4 Picture example (write the formula)
5/13/2010 TISD Lesson

5 Non example (Inorganic)
5/13/2010 TISD Lesson

6 You are made of organic compounds
You are made of organic compounds!- your hair, your skin, even your fingernails…

8 Nutrients proteins carbohydrates fats (lipids) Carbon Hydrogen
Nitrogen Oxygen Carbon Oxygen Hydrogen Hydrogen (lots) Carbon Oxygen Nutrients are found in all the foods we eat Nutrients break down into elements (tiny) so they can be absorbed by the small intestine, get into the circulatory system to supply energy to all parts of the body

11 Chemistry of the Human Body
Let’s see what Tim and Moby have to say about the elements, atoms, and molecules that make up the human body!

12 Examples of organic compounds
Carbohydrates Lipids (fats)

13 Organic Building Blocks
A few amino acids are built by carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Mammals need about 20 amino acids to make the proteins they need. Only 2 of these are amino acids containing sulfur.

14 Organic Building Blocks
We will end our organic building blocks with the ultimate of building block- DNA. We need just one more element to build it: phosphorus.
