1 Solving Multi-Step Equations
Essential Questions? How can you solve multi-step equations with rational numbers and constants? 8.EE.7b

2 Common Core Standard: 8.EE.7 ─ Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. Solve linear equations in one variable. b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.

3 Objectives: To solve equations in one variable that contain more than one operation.

4 An equation that contains multiple operations will require multiple steps to solve. You will create an equivalent equation at each step.

5 The SIX STEPS to Solving Equations
Look for the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY Distribute if necessary Look to COMBINE LIKE TERMS on the same sides of the equation Combine Like Terms if necessary Move the variable terms to the same side of the equation (USE OPPOSITES)

6 The SIX STEPS to Solving Equations
Undo the WEAK LINKS ADDITION & SUBTRACTION Use OPPOSITES! Undo the STRONG LINKS MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION Multiply by RECIPROCAL! CHECK  Use SUBSTITUTION

7 You may have to COMBINE LIKE TERMS or use the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY before you can begin solving.
