4 Planning for Failover Clustering Failover Cluster: What is it and why do I need one?
Windows Server Failover Cluster: A group of two or more interconnected servers working together to provide ‘High Availability’ High Availability: Goal of high availability (HA) is to minimize downtime on systems, applications, services, , databases, files & printers

5 Planning for Failover Clustering Sources of Downtime
Data Corruption Component Failure Application Failure Human Error Maintenance Site Outage

6 Planning for Failover Clustering What Happens in a Failover
Something is wrong!! Private Network Public Network

7 Planning for Failover Clustering Hardware: What do I need?
TechEd 2011 11/14/2018 Planning for Failover Clustering Hardware: What do I need? Servers: Two simple requirements for 2008 R2 Cluster Support All components must have a logo Storage (SAN, iSCSI Target) Network Interface Card (NIC) Host Bus Adapter (HBA) * NIC Teaming Software * MPIO/DSM (Multipathing Software) Complete solution must pass Cluster Validation * Optional. Multi-pathing and NIC teaming software are not required but can enhance fault tolerance. © 2011 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 8 Planning for Failover Clustering Hardware: What do I need?
Network: At least two network paths between nodes that fail “independently” of one another Multiple networks for added redundancy Public Network * Internal Cluster Network * Hyper-V Live Migration & Management iSCSI Network Virtual Machine Network DHCP or Static IP Addresses NIC Teaming: Helps add redundancy * Recommended requirements. Additional networks can enhance high availability and separate network roles

9 Planning for Failover Clustering Hardware: What do I need?
Shared Storage Types of Supported Shared Storage iSCSI SAS Serial Attached SCSI Fiber FCoE Fiber Channel over Ethernet NEW!

10 Planning for Failover Clustering iSCSI Target Software
Low cost block-level storage alternative to expensive SAN solutions Provide shared storage for Hyper-V to enable high availability and live migration Provide shared storage for applications hosted on a Windows Failover cluster Microsoft iSCSI Software Target 3.3 iSCSI Target Software (Downloadable and FREE!!!!)

11 Planning for Failover Clustering iSCSI Target Software
Assign device to initiator Create disk device as a *.vhd file iSCSI Initiator Software iSCSI Target Software OS detects device as new local disk

12 Planning for Failover Clustering Software: What do I need?
Windows Server Version that supports Failover Clustering Windows Server 2008 & R2 Datacenter (Core or Full) Windows Server 2008 & R2 Enterprise (Core or Full) Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 – FREE!! (Core) R2 R2

13 Planning for Failover Clustering Clustering with Server Core
Higher Availability! Removes non-critical programs from production servers No Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, etc. Smaller “attack surface” and greater stability Less servicing & patching Fewer components installed means fewer components to fail GUI management using Remote Server Administrator Tools (RSAT)

14 Planning for Failover Clustering “Sneak Peek”: Next Release Windows Server Core UI
Absolutely NO videos or photos!!! Disclaimer: Any resemblance to the eventual appearance of future versions of the Server Core UI is purely coincidental

15 Planning for Failover Clustering
Create iSCSI Disks demo

16 Planning for Failover Clustering Preparing Networks
Public Static or DHCP assigned address Default gateway Private IPv6 preferred or non routable IPv4 No default gateway Separate physical path than public network

17 Planning for Failover Clustering Preparing Shared Storage
Online disk Initialize disk as MBR or GPT Create “New Simple Volume” Format NTFS Assign drive letter, mount point, or leave unassigned Storage volumes or logical unit numbers (LUNs) exposed to the nodes in a cluster must not be exposed to other servers, including servers in another cluster

18 Planning for Failover Clustering
Presenting and Configuring iSCSI Disks demo

19 Planning for Failover Clustering Putting the Parts Together
Server Network Card NIC Teaming Host Bus Adapter Multipathing Storage iSCSI Initiator

20 Planning for Failover Clustering Mitigating Single Points of Failure
The stuff on this slide High Availability Network NIC Teaming Redundant Switches Storage Hardware RAID Switched Fabric Multipathing SAN Replication Other Backup Power Supply Server Level Backup Data Level Backup The High Availability Equation

21 Deploying a Failover Cluster
Agenda Planning for Failover Clustering Deploying a Failover Cluster Managing a Failover Cluster

22 Deploying a Failover Cluster Testing: How do I know it works?
Validation Comprehensive set of tests to verify cluster functionality and compatibility Provides actionable feedback to correct problems More information Validation not only ensures you are supported by Microsoft but also gives you confidence that cluster will work as designed if, and when you REALLY need it. When should I run validation? New cluster Hardware change Troubleshooting

23 Deploying a Failover Cluster
Cluster Validation demo

24 Deploying a Failover Cluster User Rights
Creating cluster or adding nodes Domain Admin No additional rights required Non-Domain Admin Logged on to the domain with an account that has administrator rights and permissions on all servers in that cluster Can be a Domain Users account that is in the Administrators group on each clustered server Must be given the ‘Create Computer Objects’ and ‘Read All Properties’ permissions on the default Computers OU

25 Deploying a Failover Cluster Active Directory Accounts
Administrator logs on with account with appropriate rights and permissions, and runs cluster wizards. Active Directory Create Cluster wizard uses logged on account to create computer account for the cluster Computer account with same name as cluster. Cluster Name Object (CNO)

26 Deploying a Failover Cluster Active Directory Accounts
Computer account for clustered service or application. Virtual Computer Object (VCO) User logs on with account with appropriate cluster permissions, and creates highly available applications. Active Directory Services and Applications wizard uses Cluster Name Object to create another account. Computer account with same name as cluster. Cluster Name Object (CNO)

27 Deploying a Failover Cluster Install and Configure Failover Clustering
TechEd 2011 11/14/2018 Deploying a Failover Cluster Install and Configure Failover Clustering Add the Failover Clustering Feature through Server Managers’ ‘Add Features’ wizard Run the ‘Validate Cluster’ wizard Run the ‘Create Cluster’ wizard in FCM on one of the nodes Create your HA App in Failover Cluster Manager using the ‘High Availability’ wizard It’s all wizards © 2011 Microsoft Corporation.
