6 Qualifications State legislator qualifications
Must be resident of the state you serve Usually have to be 25 for state senator Usually have to be 21 for state representative Terms vary based on state

7 Citizens in action Some states allow citizens direct action in the lawmaking process Citizens start new legislation through an initiative. Citizens draw up a petition describing the proposal and must get a certain number of signatures Some states require certain bills must be approved by voters before they become laws. This is called a referendum. States provide a way for voters to recall or remove elected officials from office.

8 Qualifications for governor
Must be US citizen and live in the state for a certain number of years. Usually have to be 30 years old. Most serve 4 year terms and some states limit terms.

10 Other officials Lieutenant Governor becomes governor if governor dies, resigns, or is removed from office. Secretary of State keeps records and carries out election laws. Attorney General takes care of state’s legal business and represents the state in courts

Senators elected to 4 year terms. Represent 212,400 to 263,500 residents Representatives elected to 2 year terms. Represent 77,000 to 91,000 residents. 148 members 110 Representatives 38 Senators Your Senator and Representative depends on where you live
