What was the Reformation?
The Reformation was a 16th-century movement in western Europe that aimed at reforming (changing) some doctrines (ideas) and practices (ways of doing things) of the Roman Catholic Church

What did people not like about the Catholic Church?
Sale of indulgences (relief of punishment due to sins that have been committed) Giving leadership roles in the church to those who gave big money$$$ They were more political than spiritual. Corruption (doing things that were not right)

What was a result of the Reformation?
Protestant (think protest) churches were created They did thing different from the Catholic church No more religious unity in Western Europe The power of the Catholic church was weakened and did control Europe like they used to before.

Counter Reformation The Pope and Catholic Church’s efforts to correct the problems of their ideas. Council of Trent- Meeting where the Catholic Church came to an agreement on what was right and wrong so that they all can be together. Ended the sale of Indulgences They hoped that this would bring people back to the Church

Martin Luther German monk
Wrote 95 theses (problems) that he saw wrong with the Catholic church Did not like that the church sold forgiveness (indulgences) Translated the Bible into German so others can read it. Vernacular- language so others can read it Founded Lutheran church- salvation through faith in Jesus This began the decline (less) in the power of the Catholic Church

John Calvin Successor of Martin Luther Encouraged Protestant ideals
Believed in Predestination- the idea that God has already chosen where you will go, heaven or hell because he knows all.

Henry the VIII (8th) King of England and was a Catholic
Wanted his marriage annulled (cancelled) so he could marry another woman to have a boy. The Pope said NO!! He made up his own Church of England so he could grant himself an annulment Now considered a Protestant

Allowed for ideas to spread quickly through out Europe 1st book printed was the Bible
