All employees login through network accounts All employees have Exchange mailboxes Growing use of Blackboard Goal is to eventually authenticate all students through individual network accounts

4 Why Issue Student E-Mail
Many students do not have an account Many students do not update their Banner information when they change accounts Faculty and Staff want a standard, reliable student address for communications New STLCC OneCard ID requires an account College wants an ongoing relationship with, and a means to contact, alumni

5 Student Requirements .edu address to take advantage of specific services and offers Sufficient storage for pictures, etc. Works on multiple common platforms Windows , Mac, Mobile IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera Reliable spam management Effective spam and virus filtering Personally controlled safe and block lists

6 College Requirements Limited support and staffing
Limited cost or no cost account name sourced in Banner Use existing Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM) infrastructure No advertising

A set of online communication and collaboration applications hosted by Microsoft 5GB Hotmail (or Exchange) Inbox 5GB SkyDrive 1,000 document Office Live Workspace with SharedView (beta) Personal web/blog/discussion site and blogging tool IM, SMS (Alerts), and Mobile access Works on common platforms (Windows/Mac, Firefox/Safari) Uses College domain name and branding Students get a address for life No ads for students in interface

8 Student E-mail Decisions
Accounts are for current, registered, credit students Accounts are created in Banner when they register Student may forward from Microsoft Accounts are marked as “Alumni” when student has not registered for three terms All accounts will use domain name

11 Initial Startup Preparation
Verify existing AD information name against Banner student and employee information and make corrections in AD,where necessary For staff, load Banner with existing AD account name Have Banner generate 3rd Party IDs for all other person records

18 Future Plans SungardHE Banner will provide student and employee updates to ILM in near real-time ILM will provision Active Directory and Windows Live accounts in near real-time from the Banner data stream Provide self-service password reset capability for AD and Windows Live accounts Once student accounts are enabled in AD, LDAP enable Blackboard and Banner Self-Service

19 Lessons Learned With ILM, it was just as easy to provision AD and Windows Live accounts as it would be to just do Windows Live No hyphens (-) or apostrophes (‘) in Windows Live user names / AD samAccountNames Multiple support groups at Microsoft ILM / MIIS Windows Live Program Windows Live MA Windows Live MA Error Message Interpretation

20 Summary Low cost way to offer student e-mail
is easily branded for the institution and lots of other functionality at no cost to the student Directory integration requires ILM
