The Cell Theory and Types of Cells

The Cell Theory Song
5
The Cell Theory The cell theory has 3 major tenets:
All living things are made of one or more cells. Cells are the basic unit life. New cells are made by other cells. The ability of cells to divide to form new cells is the basis for all reproduction (both sexual and asexual) and for the growth and repair of all multicellular organisms. The Cell Theory
6
Unicellular vs. Multicellular
It is the LOWEST LEVEL of structure capable of life and are microscopic. Don’t forget: Unicellular organisms are made up of one cell only Multicellular organisms are made up of many cells, like us! Unicellular vs. Multicellular
7
Prokayotic vs. Eukaryotic Cells… a song too
8
Both main types of cells contain cell membrane, DNA, cytoplasm, and ribosomes.
Prokaryotic Cells Do not have a true nucleus DNA is a chemical compound that stores and transmits genetic information So, the cell’s DNA is not completely separated from the rest of the cell by a nuclear membrane (envelope) 2. Eukaryotic Cells Have a nucleus where DNA is found 2 Main Types of Cells
9
A Little More about Prokaryotic Cells…
Do not have most organelles Organelles = tiny “organ-like” structures in the cell Most prokaryotes are unicellular organisms, such as bacteria. Much smaller than eukaryotic cells A Little More about Prokaryotic Cells…
10
2 Types of Eukaryotic Cells
Eukaryotic cells are much more complex and larger than their simple cousins the prokaryotic cell. They contain MANY membrane-bound organelles Most are Multicellular, few unicellular We will talk more about the inner workings of the eukaryotic cell tomorrow, but for now we are going to learn the basics of the 2 types of eukaryotic cells: Plant Cells Animal Cells 2 Types of Eukaryotic Cells
11
Plant vs. Animal Cells Rap
12
Plant vs. Animal Cells Plant Cells:
Have a cell wall, which helps with cell support Have a central vacuole, which acts as a water storage center for the plant cell Contain chloroplast, where photosynthesis takes place Photosynthesis = process through which plants get their energy by converting sunlight and energy into glucose Plant vs. Animal Cells
13
Plant vs. Animal Cells Animal Cells: Do not have a cell wall
Do not have a central vacuole, but may have a few tiny vacuoles/vesicles Do not contain chloroplasts
