3 Functions of the Skeletal System write these on your note page:
Supports and protects the body. Allows the body to move. Produces red blood cells. Stores minerals.

4 support Bones provide support for your body.
If you did not have bones, you would be a blob of tissue on the floor.

5 protection Bones protect organs. ribs protect your heart and lungs
vertebrae protect your spinal cord skull protects your brain

6 storage Bones store minerals.
The hard, outer compact bones can store calcium. Yellow marrow inside bones stores fat.

7 blood cell production Long bones produce red blood cells.
Inside larger bones like the arm and leg bones there is a soft tissue called marrow. Red marrow produces red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body.

8 movement Bones allow us to move
They provide a place for muscles to attach

9 The Skeletal System Is made up of:
Write these in your notes in the “organ” box. bones ligaments cartilage joints

10 bones Infant or baby Adult 305 bones 206 bones
Bones in the skull, pelvis, spine, and long bones fuse.

11 bones Bones grow Bones have growth plates while you are growing.
These close and become solid around age 20.

12 bone characteristics Bone is alive
Full of blood vessels Contains nerves (pain if broken) Bone grows and changes all the time. Bone is made mainly of 2 minerals Calcium Phosphorous

13 spongy bone compact bone periosteum bone marrow growth plate

14 ligaments vocabulary word! ligaments - tough, flexible strand of connective tissue that holds bones together. Found at the ends of bones

15 cartilage vocabulary word! cartilage – strong, flexible connective tissue found at the ends of bones that cushions joints. Ears and nose tip are made of cartilage.

16 joints joints – the place where two or more bones connect.
vocabulary word! joints – the place where two or more bones connect. moveable joints allow movement sliding gliding ball and socket hinge fixed joints limit movement skull pelvis
