Figure 3 | Connexins in cartilage. Cx32, Cx43, Cx45 and Cx46 are expressed throughout the superficial, middle and deep zones of cartilage. Cx29 has been detected in the middle zone. As chondrocytes exist largely as isolated cells throughout the superficial and middle zones, connexons in these zones function as hemichannels rather than as gap junctions. Gap-junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) through Cx43 might occur in chondrocytes within the deep zone or in chondrons containing multiple chondrocytes. Donahue, H. J. et al.
