For “quick” AO2/3 marks in the exam
If you were to use Blake’s criticism of established church as part of detailed analysis of, e.g., “London” and “The Sick Rose,” you could also say, by way of “mini” conclusion: Such criticism of the established church can also be found in “The Garden of Love” (from Experience). Here, Blake’s criticism is set, with deliberate irony, against an Edenic backdrop, reminiscent of the Ecchoing Green of Innocence. As in “London,” in “Garden,” the church does nothing to alleviate the poverty that is all about. And the “green” on which the church has been established – where the speaking voice used to “play” – is no longer a site of innocence or experience. Rather, it is full of “graves”; it is a site of cessation and death, and a site that “common” people can neither access nor benefit from.
