Intro In your student journals, write about the changes you’ve made in your eating and physical activity habits based on what you’ve been learning. Describe at least one of the changes you’ve made and what results you’ve noticed.

Teaching Steps Explain
Today we’re going to talk about what can happen when a person’s body image becomes so negative or distorted that she or he develops unhealthy behaviors around eating and exercise. Disordered eating – unhealthy or troublesome eating behavior (skipping means, restricting food choices, bingeing), this occurs frequently and can’t control their behavior Compulsive exercising – obsessed with being physical active to lose weight, excel in sports, exercising beyond the point of being healthy
6
Teaching Steps Ask and Discuss
Why do you think each of these eating behaviors – skipping meals, restricting food choices, bingeing, or over exercising – might be unhealthy? Summarize Skipping meals – prevent you from eating a balanced diet, your hungry and likely to eat more later Restricting food choices – isn’t getting the balance of nutrients it needs, choice to eat a variety of foods Bingeing – eating too much, too fast, little nutritional balance Over exercising – can injure the body, interfere with other aspects of life
7
Teaching Steps Complete
Disordered eating behaviors – led to eating disorders You may already know some things about these different disorders. Let’s play a quick game to see how much you know.
8
Teaching Steps Explain
Eating disorders – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder are serious mental illnesses Most associate eating disorders to wanting to lose weight but that not always true – linked to what’s going on in life Eating disorders can be dangerous and deadly…
10
Teaching Steps Explain
Sometimes people more than one eating disorder at the same time Ask and Discuss How are eating disorders related to a distorted body image? Summarize Distorted body image – a person no longer sees his or her body realistically, look at the example
11
Teaching Steps Explain
Compulsive exercising – related to an unhealthy body image
13
Teaching Steps Ask and Discuss
Do you think athletes in certain sports are more prone to eating disorders and compulsive exercising? Which sports and why? Summarize Athletes – feel pressure to remain thin or be a certain weight (gymnastics, figure skating, dancing, wrestling)
14
Teaching Steps Ask and Discuss
How do you think eating orders or exercising compulsively can affect people’s health and nutrition? Summarize Consequences – poor nutrition (not eating enough food, eating one type of food, purging) Explain Anorexia nervosa – stops the menstrual cycle, drop in heart rate/blood pressure, hair and nails become brittle, become anemic, brittle bones, affects brain function, constipation and stomach pain Bulimia nervosa – acid wears down enamel, damages esophagus, become dehydrated, kidney damage, heart failure, swollen face, scarring on hands and fingers, bad breath, dependant on laxatives
16
Teaching Steps People with eating disorder need professional help, they are mental disorders… Ask and Discuss Who are some people you could go to if you think a friend might have an eating disorder? Summarize Go to a counselor, teacher, parent, coach, nurse or any adult to get help, they will refer your friend to a professional, if needed What kinds of health care providers specialize in mental health? Professionals – psychiatrists, psychologists, and some licensed clinical social workers all help people with mental health problems
17
Teaching Steps Create Choose 1 of these situations and create a short roleplay showing how you would ask for help for the friend in the situation. A role play lets you practice ways you could respond to a real-life situation. Show what you’d say to your friend and how you’d ask a trusted adult for help. Think about the ways to help a friend or ask for help that you read about and choose at least 2 of them to demonstrate in your role play. Somewhere in your role play, be sure to explain why people with eating or exercise disorders need professional help.
