Englishman who was expelled from Oxford at age 17 and caused much embarrassment for his family. Known as “America’s First Great Champion for Liberty and Peace.” Long before he came to the colonies, he was a leading defender of religious toleration in England as he was imprisoned six times for speaking out courageously. He finally received permission to set up a colony for Quakers to worship freely because the King owed his father some money. ©
