Warm up/ Journal Jenna & her best friend, Madison are discussing their plans for the weekend. Jenna is excited because Jackson, a classmate, has invited her to a party on Saturday night. The party is at the home of a classmate whose parents will be away. Madison suspects there will be alcohol at the party and no adult supervision. Jackson has a reputation for being wild, and Madison is worried for Jenna What are some risky situations or potential dangers of going to the party?

Objective: Identify the consequences of risky behavior. Main Idea: Risk behaviors can hurt your health, but there are steps you can take to avoid and reduce these risks.

What is Risky Behavior Risk Behaviors - are ACTIONS that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. You must be able to identify risks in order to prevent, avoid, or decrease the negative effects. Everyday risks Behavioral risks Cumulative risks Stop them before they stop you….

Everyday Risks Risks that everyone encounters on a daily basis
These can not be avoided, but can be done safely to decrease the chance of a negative effect. Examples Crossing the street Using electrical appliances Riding in a car

Behavioral Risks Also known as CONTROLLABLE risks.
Risks that are a result of a person’s decisions or actions These can be avoided

There are six major risks for teens that lead to disability

1. Tobacco Use Leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. At risk:
- heart disease - cancer - respiratory disease Most adult smokers started as teens.

2. Poor Eating Habits Diet can increase or lower your chance of developing many diseases. At risk: heart disease / cancer / stroke

3. Sedentary Lifestyle - not taking part in physical activity on a regular basis. At risk: - over weight - heart disease - diabetes

4. Alcohol / Drugs Alcohol / Drugs damages the body. At risk:
liver damage / cancer heart disease / brain damage vehicle accidents STD’s

5. Sexual Behaviors Sexual activity outside of a committed relationship (marriage) puts you at risk. - HIV / AIDS / STD’s - unplanned pregnancy

6. Unintentional Injuries
Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence.

Cumulative Risk Cumulative risk are related to risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Meaning the more you often you do that risk the greater the impact. Ex) Texting on the phone while driving over the speed limit without your seatbelt.

Guided Practice Students need to be in groups of 4 to 5.
Fill out Health Lab Chart. Identify what influences you. Identify the effects on your behaviors. Determine whether it is a positive or negative behavior.

Independent Practice Create a comic strip that focuses on strategies for avoiding one of the 6 risk behaviors. The comic strip should use both words and images.
