2 Today’s Agenda Introduce Project Three Group Work: Finding Topics
Group Work: Music Eras

3 Project Three Assignment
The Project Three assignment is loaded on our course website in Unit Three.

4 What CAN I research and write about?
These are just a few examples of topics that could be explored in relation to the categories on the assignment. These are simply an example to get you thinking about what you could do for this project: Lyrics and Language – Vernacular, technological, foreign. Events – MTV and Michael Jackson, Woodstock, Motown and its cultural significance - (as well as context surrounding the events). Artists – Bob Marley and Rastafarianism or the Drug culture affecting the ideology of an artist, Darius Rucker, The Beach Boys (The “all American” white group), Elvis (The white kid that came along and shattered that persona), Marilyn Manson, Eminem (one of the first “white” rappers), John Lennon (very controversial in relation to his opinions of the government). Genres – Rap’s influence on culture and society, Blues in the early 20th century, Country and its focus on storytelling and the focus on the “white” race.

5 What CAN I research and write about?
Time Periods – 50’s (Boom Era – the economy, suburbs, baby boom, peace and prosperity), 60’s (Civil Right’s movement, radical, turbulent, but at the end, the country was falling apart), 70’s (sex, drugs, and rock and roll), 80’s ( Hair bands, new wave, pop music), 90’s (boy bands, alternative, Grunge explosion), 2000’s (Doom, digital and divas). Music Videos – Consider the audience, who is included in the video (race, ethnicity, gender, etc), and the theme and symbolism. Reality Shows – Jennifer Hudson in American Idol. Distribution of Music – album covers being a lost art, illegal downloading of music.

6 Finding Topics Brainstorming - As a group, write down 2 topics under each category, other than the examples in class, and how you can relate them to a specific purpose. Genres Artists/Bands Time Periods/Eras Writers/Lyrics Events Technology Topics related to academic majors

7 Eras in Music As a group, research the era given to your group and report back to the class. Questions to consider: What was the cultural context of this era? What genres of music were most popular at the time? Who were the major artists? What were some of the most popular songs? Is there anything else we should know about that era and music, in general? For example, Music events, TV shows, Movie soundtracks, Awards, etc….
