A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR A SPECIAL PLACE

Partnership working Geese shouldn’t have a postcode lottery Common sense approach Whilst recognising a border exists, we can still achieve more collectively than in isolation. Our border has changed many times over the millennia from Roman times to anglo-scandinavian to the various changes during the medieval period. We are now still separate countries with distinct parliaments, legislation and policies. However, we still share a common need to protect our coastlines, communities and natural areas. Estuary partnerships were born more than 20 years ago across Scotland, England and Wales and the fact that they still exist is testament to their effectiveness much of which is based on trust from the community, not something you gain overnight especially among Solway communities.

**notes from EA slides** Many of you will have seen this graph before – we have been very proud of the decrease in ‘red’ during 2014 and 2015 mainly due to the huge investment that has been delivered by United utilities providing the evidence for a Step Change in quality. And we knew 2016 was going to be a good year nationally as the bathing water results from 2012 were ‘lost’ from the dataset. But what we didn’t ever imagine was that we would not have any Poor bathing waters in These are being replaced by Good and Excellent bathing waters. Whilst we can celebrate this there is still more work to be done to be confident that our bathing waters are secure in class and do not slip.

Allerdale Bathing Waters
All achieved Sufficient – and were secure in this class – major achievement. First time in 8 years for Allonby; and 9 years for Silloth. Looking to consolidate this achievement over new few years – catchment work alongside AMP schemes. **notes from EA** This is the first time all 3 Allerdale bathing waters have achieved Sufficient – a major achievement. This improvement needs to be consolidated now and built upon. There are plans for improvements in the catchments – agricultural work through Catchment Sensitive Farming as well as through the continuation of Ellenwise – Ellenwise 2. Also planned is a major scheme at Raby Cote which should help Silloth (and the shellfishery). UU completed the scheme at Allonby WwTW prior to the start of the 2016 season which we are currently undertaking a project through WRc to help ascertain its impact on the bathing water quality at Allonby.

Marine Planning – picture of marshes
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) will consult soon on the English side of the firth and Marine Scotland will shortly do the same on their Marine Plans. This process will need an umbrella to bring both sides together to ensure that we have a single plan or two similar plans so that we can produce a cohesive and shared vision for the future of the area. In short SFP should have a major role as the honest broker and the community facilitator as they did with the development of Robin Rigg wind farm. A turbine array which sits in Scottish territorial waters and the energy generated links to the National Grid in England. There are many other examples I could use such as fisheries, shipping, wildlife designations, landscape protection and others.

Brexit In a post Brexit vacuum we can only speculate about the future and what it will hold. Borders always there (soft or hard).
