2 Welcome! Let’s introduce ourselves! Name
What do you want to get out of the next hour? What do you need to know? What are you most excited about? What has you feeling a little apprehensive? 9:50-10:00

3 UM-Flint Education Unit
Education Unit Mission Our mission is to guide and support the growth and development of our teacher candidates into caring educators and engaged citizens who embrace our guiding principles in their understanding of the many aspects of their roles in schools and society. Education Unit Vision Our vision is to prepare teachers who, as active agents, are committed to shaping classrooms, schools, and communities that reflect the ideas of a democratic society. 10:00-10:05 Education Unit is made up of those at the university committed to preparing elementary and secondary teachers—includes UM-flint faculty, staff, university supervisors, and YOU. Mentor teachers are an integral part of teacher preparation.

6 Student Teaching Experience
Seminar will be weekly Elementary students may need to leave early to arrive to campus by 4:00 Secondary starts at 4:30 Teacher candidates evaluated using the Charlotte Danielson Framework Dispositions assessment

7 Responsibilities/Activities
Rough Overview Weeks Responsibilities/Activities 1 & 2 Observe and assist cooperating teacher Learn and participate in all classroom and school routines Work with small groups of students 2-7 Take over the class schedule gradually: one content area, subject, or period at a time. Co-plan with mentor teacher Co-teach with mentor teacher 6-8 Sometime between weeks 6 and 8 complete midterm evaluation and disposition assessment and conduct evaluation meeting 7-14 Take full teaching responsibility for 7-8 weeks (if co-teaching, then the teacher candidate becomes responsible for most of the work/leading efforts), including: creating lesson plans assessment and grading conferencing with parents 13-15 Sometime between weeks 13 to 15 complete final evaluation and conduct evaluation meeting. 14 & 15 Gradually phase out of teaching

8 Mid-Term and Final Evaluation
Regular formative feedback is encouraged Danielson Framework Scoring criteria Expectations at Mid-Term and Expectations at Final Preponderance of evidence and generating notes Consensus Meeting for Mid-Term (sometime between week 6 and 8; for final sometime betwee week 13-15 Questions

10 Assessment Overview Role Assessment Tk20 Mentor Teachers
1) Professional Dispositions Assessment 2) Mid-term Student Teaching Evaluation of Candidate Performance 3) Final Student Teaching Evaluation of Candidate Performance Mentors are responsible for submitting Professional Dispositions Assessment in Tk20 if needed. University Supervisors 2) Mid-Term Student Teaching Evaluation of Candidate Performance (Assessment Four) Supervisors are responsible for submitting the Professional Dispositions Assessment AND the consensus Mid-Term and Final Student Teaching Evaluation of Candidate Performance.

Tk20 Tk20 is our tool that allows you to submit your Professional Dispositions online. It is evaluations made simple.

12 Evaluations Made Easy Be on the lookout for an with your Tk20 username and password. Log in at To access your students’ Professional Dispositions evaluation, Click the ‘Field Experience’ tab on the right. We will always you instructions to complete it. If you need support, contact us!

13 Stages of Concern for Teacher Candidates
Read the 4 stages of concern on your handout How do these resonate with you? Do they seem accurate based on your experience with student teachers or as a student teacher?

14 Discussion In your table group:
Review and discuss information presented and your individual questions What support do you need from UM-Flint? Identify any lingering thoughts/questions Please add any new questions to your list that have come up from your group After a few minutes we will ask each group to share bits of their discussion. 10:30-10:40
