6 Abstract What is an abstract?
a summary of a text, scientific article, document, speech, etc.; epitome. something that concentrates in itself the essential qualities of anything more extensive or more general, or of several things; essence. From Dictionary.com Mon AL Thur MH

7 Abstract Work with Mentor!! Summary of entire study: Why do we care?
Results Hypothesis Do not give it all away, remember you are trying to entice the reader Where is the information gap? Read up on the literature on the topic Conclusion How do the results relate to the targeted gap? What basic methods/procedures did you use? 1) Motivation/problem statement: Why do we care about the problem? What practical, scientific, theoretical or artistic gap is your research filling? 2) Methods/procedure/approach: What did you actually do to get your results? (e.g. analyzed 3 novels, completed a series of 5 oil paintings, interviewed 17 students) 3) Results/findings/product: As a result of completing the above procedure, what did you learn/invent/create? 4) Conclusion/implications: What are the larger implications of your findings, especially for the problem/gap identified in step 1?

8 Abstract Tips WORK WITH A MENTOR!!!!! Look at the booklet examples!
Keep length around words This is easy to check on word If it is longer, it will be sent back to you to be shorten If you have more than two authors per poster/oral presentation, try to keep it as short as you can. Otherwise fonts get smaller, pictures get smaller and things look goofy Mon AL Thur MH

9 Submission Method Submission will be through a form on the CNR Student Symposium website. Required fields include: names, majors, advisor(s), title, abstract, poster/oral/both, consideration for judging, poster orientation, and project type You cannot submit your abstract without filling all of these fields. If there are problems, please contact us immediately so we can fix it. AL

10 Submission Method Some formatting will not transfer from the form to us, so we will read it and check for words that should be italicized or otherwise formatted. If there is something that occurs in your abstract that you are concerned will not transfer well in the form, there will be a comments box – mention it there!

11 Submitting Your Abstract
Submit abstracts online through our website by February 9 at Midnight: Proof-read for spelling and grammar Use spell check, read it out loud, let others read it (peers, professors, your mentor) We do not want to spell check your work. You’ll have time to re-proof it, but doing it well the first time helps us as well as you. AL

12 Photos Photo Session: Feb 27th and 28th, 12:00-2:00 p.m. East Lobby of TNR Dress professionally! Don’t wear hats, sunglasses, sweatshirts Remember – this booklet can be used in the future to show off your work! Groups of researchers should show up together for a group photo If this time does not work, alternative times can be set up Steve Menzel EW

13 Booklet Cover Photo Submit a photo you’ve taken to be considered for the cover of the booklet! High quality photos only Natural Resources related Photo will be chosen by just simply trying each one out and seeing how it looks – some just inherently look better as a cover photo than others Submit to Mon AL Thur MH
