Warm Up Put these fractions into simplest form. 3/12 4/8 5/25 8/48

Think and write How can you find out if fractions are equivalent?

Today’s Lesson In this lesson, you will learn how to use equivalent fractions to write fractions as decimals. Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz.

Writing equivalent fractions as decimals
How can you make 3/4 into a decimal? You can’t use tenths because 4 doesn’t divide into 10. You can use hundredths and divide the hundredths grid into fourths. Shade 3/4 of it and see how many hundredths it is.

Equivalent fractions and decimals
To make a fraction into a decimal, you can find an equivalent fraction using tenths or hundredths. Sometimes, you have to use hundredths because the number is not a multiple of 10. Example: 4/5 can be made into 8/10 by multiplying both numerator and denominator by /10 can be written as 0.8

Practice! Turn these fractions into decimals using equivalent fractions. 3/5 1/4 24/25 6/9 3/12

Problem 1 Sean used 1/3 cup of sugar to make chocolate chip cookies. Write this fraction as a decimal.

Problem 2 Tori has 12 cupcakes. She says that 1/4 of the cupcakes have blue frosting and .50 of the cupcakes have green frosting. Does Tori have the same amount of blue and green cupcakes? Explain.

Problem 3 Mr. Sanderson is grading 20 tests. He says that 1/4 of the students scored 100 on the test, while .25 students scored a 90 on the test. Mr. Sanderson says that the same number of students scored a 100 and a 90. Is he correct? Explain.

Lesson Wrap Up In this lesson, you learned how to use equivalent fractions to change a fraction to a decimal. Reflection: Draw a picture that incorporates the concepts learned today. Homework (13-6 Practice) for one “Paw Signature” and ( Reteaching & Practice) if you want two “Paw Signatures.” Website for Practice:
