TODAY: Fill in the blanks-Plate Tectonics Worksheet
Review Continental Drift/Plate Tectonics Plates in Motion-3 types of plate boundaries
2
WORLD PLATE BOUNDARIES:
3
PLATE SYMBOLS: -match each symbol
5
Plate Movement: Convention currents – As the molten material is heated due to radioactive decay of elements, it rises to the lithosphere and flows horizontally before cooling and descending to be reheated again. When the heated magma reaches the surface, it forces the plates apart at spreading centre (in water) or rift valley (on land). Mantle convection responsible for plate mvement 5
6
Plate Movement: As the plates are pushed apart, eventually one or both moving plates contact. Result is the formation of mountains or a subduction zone – a denser plate is forced underneath a less dense plate. Trench – A valley that runs parallel to the subduction zone. 6
7
3 Main Plate Interactions:
1. Divergent Plate Boundaries As magma rises and cools, it pushes the older rock away. Like a conveyor belt Newer rock is found closer to spreading oceanic ridges (ocean) or rift-valley (land). 7
8
2. Convergent Plate Boundaries (3 types)
i) Oceanic-continental collision Because of different densities, subduction occurs Material from the plate melts off Hot magma is pushed up, forming a cone-shaped volcano; volcanic belts form Likely to experience earthquakes 8
9
ii) Oceanic-Oceanic Collision - Subduction occurs - Chain of volcanoes are produced - Earthquakes can be shallow or deep. 9
10
iii) Continental-continental collision - Subduction does not occurs - When two plates collide, they crumple and fold, forming mountain range. -SUBDUCTION DOES NOT OCCUR
11
3) TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARIES:
-The boundary where plates side past one another, moving in opposite directions are call transform plate boundaries. - Produce LARGE, SHALLOW earthquakes (95% of earthquakes occur here) - A break or fracture in rocks layers due to movement is called a fault -NO VOLCANOES or MOUNTAINS FORM here Example: San Andreas Fault in California.
