2. About Dual Enrollment Programs
Dual enrollment allows qualified juniors & seniors to enroll in college coursework while still in high school.
Admissions requirements reflect admissions standards of the college.
Credit for dual enrollment courses is generally accepted at most Virginia universities & colleges. Students should contact their four-year transfer institution to discuss the applicability of dual enrollment coursework. Although we can talk about that too!
DE students are included in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Acts (FERPA) Agreement

3. Advantages of DE
Accelerates a student’s college career and provides quality, affordable education close to home.
Students enter college with credits applicable to their degree program
Provides access to college resources, facilities and services
Students stand out to the 4-year institutions from their peers: They see that the student has already been successful in college-level work

4. Step 1: Apply to TNCC
Students apply to the College only once; there is no application fee. It takes about 10 minutes!
Complete the TNCC application online via:
At the end of the application students will receive a seven-digit TNCC ID# and username/password which are very important to keep for registration and access to their myTNCC accounts

5. Step 2: Test for Eligibility
Students must take the college placement test. It's free, untimed, and can be split into several sessions (June 11, 2018)
Students are aware of results immediately
Students are allowed ONE re-test per calendar year
Test Waivers for the English test may be granted with qualifying PSAT/SAT/ACT scores (or 3+ on AP English)
For GSST, ALL students must test in math, unless they scored a 3+ in AP Calculus

7. Step 3: Register for the Course
Students must register each term for new DE courses (Fall and Spring)
Students will receive the paper DE Registration Form from their teacher
Complete, sign and return this form to the students teacher

9. Ensuring Success Adhere to registration/testing deadlines
Please keep in mind that DE courses become a part of a student's permanent college transcript
Adhere to Withdrawal deadlines
Students can check their registration status on myTNCC (it is their responsibility)
Remember to request a transcript to be sent to the 4-year institutions (this is not done automatically)

10. FAQ’s
Can I opt out of Dual Enrollment this semester but choose it next semester/year? Course prerequisites will often prohibit an opt out to required courses.
What does DE cost? Currently, Dual Enrollment is offered to students at no cost due to a contractual agreement between Thomas Nelson and Governor’s School. There will be a cost assessed during the fall of 2019 and students and parents will be notified accordingly.
What is FERPA and does it apply? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects the confidentiality of student information with the college. No student information is shared without the written consent of the student.
Do students need to come on-campus? We welcome student participation and students are welcome to come on campus and participate in student activities and resources.
Are these courses transferable? Course transferability may vary depending on the college of choice. Please contact your chosen college to confirm course transfers.
