Analysis: Problem Statement
We need a more efficient and effective way to treat nosebleeds, especially under a time constrain. 1. Wrestling meets—can expect at least one nosebleed every hour—up to 25 in one tournament 2. Current treatments—doesn’t fit right, hard to put in and remove, either very cheap or very expensive Current most popular material is dental roll—but it was made for the mouth, not the nose. Price ranges of products which ARE designed for the nose start at $3 Need a product which is designed specifically for the nose—yet affordable
3
Analysis: Performance Criteria
Design Criteria: Reasonable price Absorbent material Stops bleeding quickly Easy removal and insertion Fits well Want something cheaper than $3 (preferrably >$1) must absorb well—probably cotton material, woven well so no strays or breaks must FIT well (variety of sizes, vs current one-size-fits-all) tab or loop so easy to remove (clip will not work as it can be knocked out)
4
Analysis: Primary Objective
Project Goal: Develop inexpensive, effective nosebleed plug to be used in athletics, specifically high school wrestling
5
Hypothesis: Solution Description
6
Hypothesis: Goals Quick and Easy Simple instructions Tapered
Stripes of Vasoconstrictor
7
Hypothesis: Factors Benefits: Cost Effective Variety of sizes
Anatomical fit Easy insertion and removal
8
Hypothesis: Factors (cont.)
What will affect costs: Manufacturers (US or overseas) Packaging Brand name or generic FDA testing

Validation: completed
Analyze preliminary performance based on parts Tampon material does absorb well Size is better fit than cotton rolls Cheaper than QR or rhinorocket

Future Validation We haven’t completed synthesis phase
Need manufacturer Will show ATCs, ENTs, and athletes our prototypes and sketches
