2 Today’s Objectives: Discuss to understand specific inquiry processes
Discuss to understand how those processes work in your research discipline

3 Inquiry Processes: A quick review These are different lenses in which you may approach your research method building. INFORMATION GATHERED FROM: College Board, 2015 AP Research Workshop Handbook and Resources, Pages 74-75 College Board, 2015 AP Research Workshop Handbook and Resources, Page 13 -Adapted from: “Choosing your Research Method in a Nutshell” (Rice & Simon, 2010)

4 Case Study Research Observation of a specific group to determine how and why a situation exists within that group

5 Causal-comparative research
Identify causal relationship among variables that can’t be controlled

6 Content Analysis Analyze text and make inferences

7 Correlational Analysis
Collect data and determine level of correlation between variables

8 Descriptive Research Study of “as is” phenomena

9 Ethnographic Observation of a specific cultural group to identify patterns and trends

10 Experimental Research
Study the effect of manipulating a variable or variables

11 Grounded Theory Produce a theory that explains a process based on observation

12 Hermeneutic Research Study the meaning of subjects/texts by concentrating on the historical meaning of the experience and its developmental and cumulative effects on the individual and society

13 Historical Research Historical data collection and analysis of person or organization

14 Meta-Analysis Research
Seek patterns in data collected by many existing studies and formulate principles

15 Narrative Research Study of single person’s experiences

16 Phenomenology Make sense of lived experiences of participants regarding a specified phenomena

17 Quasi-Experimental Manipulations of variables in populations without benefit of random assignment or control group

18 True Experimental Research
Structured research with isolated variables and controls
