Be able to explain how rainbows are created
Your friend has sent you a postcard saying that they have seen a rainbow on holiday, but they don’t understand how this happens. Write a postcard back explaining how a rainbow is created… raindrops speed refraction/ refracted sunlight dispersion/ dispersed angle

Be able to explain how rainbows are created
We see light from the Sun as white light… When sunlight shines through raindrops, …its speed changes – the light slows down. This causes the light to be refracted. Different colours are refracted at different angles, …so the light is dispersed. We see the dispersed colours as a rainbow.

A rainbow is made up of different….
COLOURS! But, how do we see different colours? Why do they not all look exactly the same? … to explain this we need to look back at reflection of light.
5
Colour Success Criteria Today you will:
Know that white light is made up from all the colours of the spectrum combined Understand the effect of using different coloured filters Be able to explain how we see different colours
6
Combining all the colours in the spectrum creates white light!
Know that white light is made up from all the colours of the spectrum combined What happens when you combine all the colours of the spectrum together? Newton’s discs Combining all the colours in the spectrum creates white light!

Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet White light is made up of all the colours in the rainbow. To see any of these different colours, all the colours of white light are absorbed EXCEPT for the colour that you can see, which is reflected back!
